Underdog Spurs Starting Hot!

For today's post, I will write about one of the NBA's most surprising teams. That being the San Antonio Spurs ("Spurs"). This post will be separated into two separate paragraphs. The first, discussing a brief history of the Spurs; and the second discussing the current state of the Spurs.

Brief History of the Spurs:

The Spurs for many years were the model franchise in the NBA as they were the pillar of consistency and excellence. They won championships in three different decades. These decades are, the 90s,00s, and 10s. In the said period of time, the Spurs won a total of 5 NBA Championships and earned the NBA’s highest win percentage. These championships were won by many legendary former Spurs and NBA Hall of Famers, such as David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker. With that said, Father Time remains undefeated, and eventually said legends retired. Specifically, for the Spurs, things have not been the same since the end of the Big 3 era, which officially came to an end in 2018. Since then, the Spurs have struggled to find their footing and create a true identity. The Spurs had become a mediocre team with no vision. That being said, this would all change this past summer. Over the summer, the Spurs would shock the basketball world as they announced they would be trading all-star point guard Dejounte Murray in return for future draft capital. With this move, the Spurs would signify their intention of rebuilding their roster with a focus on future player development. This, in turn, would make the Spurs one of the youngest and most unproven rosters in the entire NBA.

The Current State of the Spurs:

Heading into the season many experts and analysts predicted the Spurs to finish as one of the worst teams in the league. The Spurs are favored to be one of the best-positioned teams to land the number-one pick in this year's upcoming 2023 NBA Draft. With all that said, early in the season the Spurs seem to be proving everybody wrong. Currently, the Spurs are ranked fourth in the Western Conference with a 5-2 record. They are led by two young talented players Keldon Johnson (“Keldon”) and Devin Vassell (“Devin”). Keldon is currently averaging 23.9 points per game with 5.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. As for Devin, he is currently averaging 19.8 points per game with 5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. Given their results, the Spurs hope the talented duo can continue their hot start as they play the Toronto Raptors tonight at 7:00. All in all, the Spurs seem to have some valuable pieces that they can use to help build a bright future. Whether they will continue their hot start remains to be seen, but one thing for certain is the future in San Antonio is bright.
